There’s a simple way to ensure that your Kindle arrives already registered under your name, with all your books accessible on it. All you will need to do when it arrives is open your library and download the books you want from your library to your new device. Here’s how it works:

• When it arrives, it will already be registered to your account!

• Log in to your Amazon account on a computer or laptop and go to the “Manage Your Kindle” page.
• Make sure WhisperSync is turned on.
• On your old Kindle device, go to “Sync & Check for Items” to ensure that your device is fully synced with your Amazon library.
• Turn on your new Kindle and navigate to “Settings.”
• Select “Register” and enter your Amazon account information.
• From the “Manage Your Kindle” page on your computer, hit the “Actions” button.
• Select “Delivery to…” and tap your new Kindle device to have all of your content transferred over to your new Kindle.

First Steps

Where to Find Free Children’s Books

The number of free children’s books can fluctuate depending on author promotions or newly-added permafree (permanently free) Kindle downloads. However, you can always find the most up-to-date selection by clicking this link.

When you click on a book title you think your child might enjoy, most times it will be 100% free for all users. In rare instances, some titles might only be free for Prime members or for Kindle Unlimited subscribers. If you’re not a member of these services, you’ll have to pay the listed price for the book.

To tell whether or not a book is truly free or only free for select members, look closely at the listed price beneath a title. The price may say it’s $0.00 for Kindle Unlimited subscribers, and then list the price for non-members below that.

Navigating the Free Kids Books Selection

When you land on the free Kindle books for kids page, you’ll notice a list of subgenres on the left-hand side of your screen. You can click on any of these subgenres to narrow down your search and find free books in those subgenres.

You can also sort your refine your search by using the “Sort by” drop-down box on the upper right-hand side of your screen. Click here to sort titles by featured books, price, highest customer reviews, or publication date.

This article explains how to get free ebooks and read them on your tablet, phone PC or Mac. First a word about free books. There are three types of free ebooks that are 100% legal to download. Those include:

• Books in the public domain.
• eBooks that authors or publishers price at free either permanently (permafree) or for a limited time (promotional free).
• Library books which you download as ebooks via the app OverDrive (these are free to read for 14 days).

There are a number of sites you can go to for free ebooks, but we recommend the Amazon Kindle store because it is simple, legal, offers various reading apps and contains both free public domain books as well as free books from publishers and authors. Other sites such as Project Gutenberg, Kobo, iBooks, and Nook have a limited selection of free books and the books are slightly more difficult to download and read. For this reason we recommend free Kindle books.

To download free Kindle books you will need: 1) An Amazon.com account (or an account on Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.ca, or Amazon.au) and 2) a PC, Mac, phone or tablet with an internet connection.

How to download free ebooks

Step 1: Login to Amazon

Login to your Amazon account.

Step 2: Open Kindle Cloud Reader on your PC (or download the Kindle App for your phone)

If you want to read on your laptop go to Amazon’s Kindle Cloud Reader and login

If you want to read on your phone or tablet download the Kindle app and then login

Step 3: Open your ebook library

Your “Kindle library” contains all of the Kindle books that you have purchased or downloaded. If you have never purchased or downloaded a Kindle book, then your library will be empty.

If you are using Kindle Cloud Reader the home page functions as your “library” and any books that you have purchased/downloaded will show up in this section.  If you don’t see recently purchased books, just hit the refresh button.

If you are using the Kindle app click on “Library” to see your ebooks.

Step 4: Browse and find free Kindle Books.

In you want to browse free books by genre, go to JustKindleBooks, then click or tap on the genre you are interested in, then click or tap on the sub-genre, and you will be taken to Amazon.com where you will see a selection of free books in that sub-genre. When you find a free book that you want, click the button that says “Buy now for free” on the book’s detail page. Don’t click “read now for free” as that will take you to a signup page for Kindle Unlimited which is not free. (Note: Amazon can sneak in some non-free books into the selection so make sure the buy button you click says “Buy now for free”. If you accidentally purchased a book that was not free you can request a refund following these steps.)

Step 5: Read your free books

Go back to the Kindle App or Kindle Cloud Reader, refresh your Library and presto your free books will be there. If using the app or a Kindle device you may need to download the books to begin reading them.

FAQ: Trouble shooting your free Kindle Books

Why aren’t my books showing up in my Kindle library?

This is likely due to one of two reasons. 1) Your books have been delivered to another one of your devices. Try changing the default device that you want your Kindle books delivered to. 2) If you have two different Amazon accounts, make sure you are logged into the same account when downloading and reading the books.

Right now, Amazon UK is offering a free Kindle book selection available to residents in the UK. This collection, comprising about 250 books total, will only be free for a limited time, so be sure to check out the variety of materials before the deals come to an end! You’ll be able to find a good mix of classic novels, contemporary releases, school books, current magazines, and other options.

Do I Need a Kindle to Read These Books?

As mentioned, Audible doesn’t require an account, login or registration to listen to this collection. The Audible Stories FAQ page claims that no strings are attached.

How can you listen to the free stories?

To listen, you’ll need to access this page from a browser.  Any newer browser will work, and you can hit the page from your PC, phone or tablet. But avoid Safari on iPad as Audible acknowledges some issues with this device/browser pairing. And lastly…sorry you can’t download these titles for free listen to them on the Audible app.

How to use the OverDrive app

The OverDrive app and the new updated version of the app, called Libby are both available for your phone or tablet. Simply visit the app store on your device, search for OverDriveor Libby, and download the free app. Once you complete this step, here’s how to find eBooks to borrow:

• Open the app and find your preferred library.
• Select your library’s digital book collection.
• Tap “Borrow” on any available book (or click the book to view more details about it).
• Add your library card number or PIN if prompted.
• Select a lending period and select “Borrow” again.

Once you borrow the title, you can click “Read now with Kindle” to be redirected to Amazon. Here, you’ll be able to send the book to your Kindle device or free Kindle reading app. Additionally, the OverDrive app has a few other perks for readers:

• If you download the OverDrive app on multiple devices, OverDrive will sync all of your books across all those devices.
• You can customize each eBook’s font size and margins to your exact liking.

How to use OverDrive on the web

Even if you don’t have a Kindle, tablet, or mobile device, OverDrive’s library is still accessible on the web. Simply go to the OverDrive website to find your library and complete the following steps:

• Select your library and click on the “Kindle Books” link near the top of the site.
• Click “Borrow” on any title you’d like to borrow. Sign into your library account if prompted.
• Choose a lending period for the book and hit “Borrow” again.
• Click “Read Now with Kindle” to finish the book borrowing process on Amazon.

Borrowing eBooks vs downloading free eBooks

Although OverDrive is simple and convenient, it does have a couple drawbacks. It can be a hassle to set up if you don’t know your library card number or PIN. Plus, depending on your library’s collection of eBooks, you may find that:

• The selection of eBooks is significantly smaller than the library’s physical book collection.
• You may need to wait weeks before you can borrow a new or popular eBook.
• The borrowing period might come to an end too soon. You might only get a week or two to read your book before it’s automatically returned!

If you want to access truly free books (ones you don’t have to return), look no further than the Kindle store. It often lists over 70,000 free titles at any given time, all in a wide variety of genres. The list of free eBooks changes frequently, so you’ll never run out of fresh content to enjoy.

Giving Someone a Single Kindle Book

If you’re planning on buying a single Kindle book for someone, this simple 3-step process takes only a few minutes of your time:

• Visit the Amazon Kindle store and search for the book you’d like to give.

• Once you’ve found the book, look on the right side of the screen. Right beneath the link that says “Buy Now,” there’s an option that reads “Give as a Gift” or “Buy for Others.” Click on this link.

• Here, you can decide how and when you want the eBook to be delivered. You can choose to have the gift email sent to either you or the person you’re gifting it to. If you’d like the email sent to the recipient directly, you can choose to add a personalized message or you can decide when you’d like them to receive the email. If you choose to send the gift email to yourself, you could then print out the email and give it to the recipient yourself.

How to Gift Multiple Copies of a Book

Have you read a book this year that was so good you think everyone should read it? You can easily share it this holiday season with all your friends and family thanks to Amazon’s “Buy for Others” feature.

• Visit the Amazon Kindle store and search for the eBook title.
• Once you’re on the Kindle book product page, on the right side of the screen, there’s an option beneath the “Buy Now” link that reads “Buy for others.” Simply select the quantity of eBooks you’d like to gift, and then click the link.

• To deliver the Kindle books, you have two options. You can choose to email a personalized message with the eBook redemption link one by one, or you may use a template to quickly send the Kindle books to every recipient all at once.

Should Authors Gift Their Own Books?

Writing and publishing a book is a great accomplishment and one that you’d love to share with the people you’re close to. Your loved ones would likely cherish your book and would thoroughly enjoy it, plus you’d get royalties for each Kindle book you buy! However, if you’re not sure if a recipient will accept the gift, you might want to consider a different present for that person.

When a recipient receives the email to redeem a gifted Kindle book, they have the option to a) get the gifted book for free or b) choose an Amazon gift card instead of accepting the book.

Here’s what Amazon says about royalties and ranking in regards to gifted books: “Your royalties will be based on the price and royalty option selected at the time the Kindle gift was purchased. After the gift recipient downloads your title, your royalties will accrue, and the sale will show on your reports. A gift sale counts toward a sales rank only if it is redeemed within 24 hours by the recipient.”

How Recipients Can Accept Your Gift

When your loved one gets the email with the Kindle book gift, here’s all they need to do to accept your present:

• Click on the link sent in the email that says “Get your Kindle Book Gift Now.”
• Then, click “Accept your Kindle Book Gift.” The recipient may need to log on to their Amazon account, if prompted.
• Select what device they’d like the Kindle book to be delivered to, such as their Fire tablet or their Kindle app.

However, keep in mind that the recipient might not accept your gift, or they might decide to return it. Amazon writes that, “You are welcome to gift your book to as many people as you like to help promote it. Be aware that gift recipients have the option of choosing a gift certificate instead. Also, as with all Kindle sales, gift recipients have the option to return the gift within 7 days of downloading.”
