If your Kindle says it is unable to connect, the problem is usually related to Wi-Fi. It can also happen if your Kindle is connected to the wrong network, your device software is out of date, or, on some older devices, the date and time are incorrect. Work through these steps in order, starting with the fastest fixes.
Step 1: Check Airplane Mode and Wi-Fi
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open Quick Settings
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off
- Confirm your Kindle is connected to the correct Wi-Fi network
- Double-check that you entered the correct Wi-Fi password
You should also check whether another device, such as your phone or laptop, can connect to the same Wi-Fi network. If other devices cannot connect either, the problem is likely your internet connection or router, not your Kindle. For Amazon’s official troubleshooting steps, see Resolve Wi-Fi Connection Issues on Your Kindle E-Reader.
Step 2: Restart Your Kindle and Router
- Restart your Kindle
- If needed, hold the power button for about 40 seconds
- Unplug your Wi-Fi router for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in
- Wait for the router to come fully back online, then reconnect your Kindle
Step 3: Forget and Re-Join the Wi-Fi Network
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi
- Select your network and choose Forget
- Re-join the network and enter the password carefully
This can fix problems caused by a saved network connection that is no longer working properly.
Step 4: Check Date, Time, and Software Updates
On some older Kindle devices, incorrect date and time settings can interfere with connectivity. Outdated software can also cause connection problems. Check your device settings and install any available updates.
If your Kindle will not update automatically over Wi-Fi, you may need to install the latest software manually. This is especially important on older devices.
Step 5: If Your Kindle Connects but Your Books Still Do Not Appear
This is a different problem from a Wi-Fi connection failure. If your Kindle reconnects but your books do not show up right away, open your Kindle Library and sync your device so your content refreshes.
How to Confirm the Problem Is Fixed
Once your Kindle reconnects, try a simple action that requires internet access, such as syncing your library or opening the Kindle Store. That confirms your Kindle is actually back online.
After you reconnect, you can also browse free Kindle books and download a short title to confirm everything is working normally again.
When to Contact Amazon Support
If your Kindle still cannot connect after trying all of the steps above, the issue may be tied to your device model, software version, account registration, or hardware. In that case, contact Amazon support or check Amazon’s Kindle help resources for your specific device.
