What is a Kindle Passcode?

If you are an avid reader you may want a little bit of privacy for your Amazon Kindle e-reader especially if you live in a home where other people can easily access your Amazon Kindle e-reader. Maybe you don’t want people to see what you are reading. Or perhaps you don’t want a family member reading your books and progressing ahead or paging backward from where you left off. Or you might be reading e-books for adults that you don’t want kids to accidentally see.

Kindle passcode password

Whatever the case, if you want to protect your Kindle e-reader to keep others from seeing your books, you can do so by setting a passcode. A passcode is essentially as password or pin to access your Kindle e-reader:

How to set a passcode for your Amazon Kindle device

  1. Swipe down from the top of your Kindle’s screen
  2. Tap All Settings
  3. Select Device Options
  4. Tap Device Passcode
  5. Enter your passcode – make sure it is a code that is unique and hard for an intruder to guess.
  6. Select OK on your device to save this new passcode.

What to do if you forget your Amazon Kindle passcode?

As much as it’s annoying, it’s normal for you to forget the passcode for your Amazon Kindle e-reader. Should that happen, follow the instructions below:

  1. The best thing for you to do is try remembering and entering the passcode you recall. If your attempts fail, you will see the option “Forgot Passcode?”
  2. Select Forgot Passcode
  3. Next, you will see a message window telling you to contact customer support to receive help with resetting your passcode
  4. Proceed to www.amazon.com/devicesupport to have a chat conversation with Amazon’s customer support

If, for some reason, Amazon’s customer support team cannot assist you, you need to try out this last-resort option. We are calling it the last resort because this option doesn’t only reset your Amazon Kindle’s passcode; it will reset your entire Amazon Kindle e-reader, together with all the data and books stored on it. Everything will be gone from the device! But your books, reading progress, and any highlights or notations you made in them will still be in your library and you will be able to resync them to the device later.

Only take the steps below if you can’t get help from Amazon’s customer support to reset your Amazon Kindle device.

How to reset your Amazon Kindle e-reader including all your data

  1. Open the passcode screen
  2. Enter 111222777
  3. Tap Ok.

As explained before, this will erase all data and books stored on your Amazon Kindle device. However, you can restore your books, notes, and highlights from the cloud. So your data won’t be lost forever; you just have to be prepared to retrieve it after your Amazon Kindle device resets.

The restoring process can be quite long; it all depends on the quality of your internet connection.

Before performing this last resort option, it’s essential to confirm beforehand if all your books, notes, and highlights are saved to your Kindle cloud. Doing this is simple.

  1. Swipe down from the top of your Amazon Kindle’s screen
  2. Select either Quick Actions or Menu
  3. Then select the Sync icon or the Sync and Check for Items option

When the sync option is on, your data will sync to other devices you use for reading. However, most notably in the case of this article, you will be able to retrieve all your data, books, highlights, and notes after resetting your Amazon Kindle passcode.

If the instructions above do not work, check out this Amazon support article. For more clarity, you can also read this Yahoo article.
